I've watched all 43 episodes of Mobile Suit Gundam. It was ahead of its time. I can see why it was so influential.
The themes of moral ambiguity and the horrors of war demand a bit more than you expect. It's hard-ish sci-fi where everyone, including the teenagers, are war criminals.
I'd recommend the compilation movies if you don't feel like a 43 episode commitment. They hit most of the major plot points and set the stage for the Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin mini series. I watched that as well and it is pretty damn good.
